But pajamas were arguably one of the biggest hits. Nightwear sales jumped last year – they were up 143% in April compared to March, according to data from Adobe Analytics. But instead of the typical T-shirt and sweat shorts one might wear to bed, some dress in pajamas – Initiated, The Washington Post and The Wall Street Journal all of them have recently covered the rise of what one writer has described as “elegant sleepwear.” You can actually wear these pajamas out of bed, like Sleeper’s feathered party pajamas or Brooklinen’s swimsuit. On the surface, silk may not feel wearable (especially in hot weather), but it could be a fabric you might want to consider putting on before bed.
“All kinds of sleepers can benefit from sleeping in silk,” explained Logan foley, the editorial director of SleepFoundation.org. As sleep experts have already shared with us, temperature can play a big part in making you toss and turn. And silk can help “regulate body temperature, keeping you cool all night long, which is a key part of falling asleep and staying asleep,” she said. If you’re wondering if you should add silk to your nighttime routine, we’ve consulted with experts to learn more about wearing silk to sleep and have compiled some silk pajama options for you to consider based on their recommendations.
Why wear silk to sleep, according to experts
The breathability of silk makes it a preferred material for face masks and pillow cases. This breathability is due to the fineness of the fiber in the fabric, which ultimately helps it feel so supple on the body – even more so than other natural textiles like cotton, linen or wool, explained Ashlee Rzyczycki, Visiting Assistant Professor at St. Thomas University in Florida, specializing in sustainability in fashion.
It’s also hypoallergenic, helping your skin to breathe, Rzyczycki told us. If what you have worn in bed itches or irritates you, silk might be an improvement. “Silk is very soft against the skin, reducing the snags and scuffs that can come from other materials,†Foley added. “People who suffer from skin problems like eczema and psoriasis may find silk particularly good for sleeping because it won’t irritate their skin as much as other pajama materials like cotton and wool.”

What to pay attention to when shopping for silk sleepwear
When shopping for silk sleepwear, you might come across pajamas that are silky rather than made of the more expensive material, like this one. All of the experts we spoke to agreed that you should be looking for 100 percent silk instead. “There are options that mix silk and other materials like cotton or rayon, but they won’t be as comfortable and ‘silky’ as a more expensive 100% silk option,†Foley explained.
Rzyczycki and Prefect Arya, an assistant professor of textile development and marketing at the Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT), advised examining the label of clothing marketed as being made from silk. “Sometimes some brands may charge more money for a product in their brand’s name†rather than for the actual quality of the fabric, Arya added. Since silk is a much more expensive fabric than others, you probably want to know that what you are buying is really silk instead of an imitation. Satin, for example, looks a lot like silk and can be made from silk fibers, but it can also be made from synthetics like polyester, Rzyczycki said. “Just because you think it might be silk doesn’t mean it is,†she added.
Arya said it is difficult to match the quality of silk, noting that polyester is “an extremely inexpensive substitute”. As for what makes silk much more expensive, it depends on how it is made – it is extracted from cocoons that silkworms spin, and its production takes time, slowing the supply, Arya explained. Even between different silk pajamas, you can find a range of prices – some are just under $ 100 while others can go much higher. The cost contrast is related to the size of the yarn and the compactness of the weave when producing silk – the larger the raw material used, the more expensive it can be, Arya said.
Unlike other pajama sets, silk ones need more maintenance – typically you’ll see a “dry clean only†marker on a label, as Rzyczycki and Arya pointed out. Both recommended following the directions on a label when it comes to cleaning silk. But that doesn’t mean silk sleepwear can’t be washed at home – some are machine washable as well. Still, Rzyczycki suggested washing your hands instead and looking for a detergent made specifically for washing silk. If you toss silk pajamas in the washing machine, Arya advises you to go for a gentle cycle and line or flat dry in the shade. Silk can fade in the sun, possibly dulling a once brighter color, Rzyczycki told us. And keep in mind that while you tend to sweat a lot while you sleep, silk has a penchant for stains due to sweating, Rzyczycki said.
