Southeast grocers revise store-branded packaging to be more sustainable
Southeastern Grocers Inc. has committed to increasing the sustainability of its own brand packaging by the end of 2028 in response to public feedback citing packaging as a top sustainability concern.
According to new data from Sensormatic SolutionsIrish company Johnson Controls’ global portfolio of retail solutions, the The era of retail accountability for sustainability initiatives is in full swing. The company’s 2022 survey of U.S. consumer sentiment toward sustainability found that 62% of respondents would like to see retailers improve their environmental performance by switching to sustainable packaging alternatives.
For its private label packaging, Southeastern Grocers is committed to eliminating the use of polystyrene; make all packaging reusable, recyclable or industrially compostable; and include an average of 30% post-consumer recycled material in all packaging.
In addition to implementing sustainable packaging for its own brand products, Southeast grocers is in partnership with How2Recycle, a standardized labeling system for packaging that clearly communicates recycling instructions to consumers based on packaging specifications. How2Recycle follows the guidelines of the United States Federal Trade Commission. To start this new partnership, Southeast grocers will begin adding the How2Recycle label to the packaging of its private label products to help educate customers on the best way to recycle packaging and prevent more materials from going to landfill. How2Recycle is part of a non-profit environmental association based in Charlottesville, Virginia Green Blue.
