One of the world’s most iconic luxury department stores, Harrods, has joined a growing list of retailers joining the fashion rental market.
London-based Harrods has partnered with UK fashion rental market My Wardrobe HQ to allow customers to rent designer brands sold in its Knightsbridge store.
Prices start at $ 8 per day for a minimum of four days to rent a designer top. Dresses that would normally cost over $ 1,000 to buy can be rented for around $ 20 per day.
According to Business of Fashion, Harrods will provide the inventory and My Wardrobe HQ will handle the logistics and marketing. Customers can rent the clothes through the My Wardrobe HQ website or in its pop-up location at the Harrods store.
The clothing rental industry is booming, spurred on by companies like Rent the Runway launching subscription services that allow customers to rent clothing. Increasingly, retailers are partnering with clothing rental sites or launching their own services, like Urban Outfitters’ Nuuly.
For Harrods, it’s a way of using last season’s inventory that was stuck in stores during the pandemic.
“There have been many spectacular collections and remarkable pieces that haven’t had the chance to be seen or celebrated, so offering these pieces to our clients for rent for their next event is one way to breathe new life into these products. Harrods fashion director Lydia King told WWD.
“Our fashion clients are having more weddings, birthdays and other celebrations than ever before, and the joy of dressing for an event is back,” she said.
