Bessie Besana Showcases ‘Pavement’ Collection at New York Fashion Week – Up News Info

Bringing the street style of the Big Apple to the catwalk

New York is known for many things – Broadway, the Statue of Liberty and the luminous Times Square – but what really makes it “the center of the world” are its people. It has an abundance of diversity, creativity and style, and New Yorkers best exemplify this through their clothing. Its streets are like its fashion shows, always full of clothes that look like me with an attitude to match. As the late photographer Bill Cunningham said, “The best fashion show is definitely on the street. It always has been and it always will be.”

Filipino fashion designer Bessie Besana agrees with this notion of style. That’s why, during his presentation at New York Fashion Week (NYFW), he brought the urban vibe of the street to the catwalk with his collection called “Pavement”.

“It’s inspired by the way I see New Yorkers walking down the street,” the designer told the Manila Bulletin Lifestyle. “The materials used in the collection are mainly soft wool and denim. These are materials used by ordinary New Yorkers who naturally make no apologies for what they wear. Every day is a fashion show in the city.

It’s nothing new for Bessie to showcase her work overseas, but her participation in NYFW 2022 via VIP Pageantry is special because it’s aimed at a broader American audience. Her NYFW journey began with former beauty queen Dani Walker, who introduced her to NYFW VIP owners Holly Lynch and Laylah Rose.

“During the introductory meeting with them for a different company, they mentioned they were having a show for NYFW and invited me to be one of the designers on the list. Of course, I took advantage of that. to showcase my design since this show is a registered event with the Council of Fashion Designers of America,” he says. “Most of the pieces I showed during the show are still made in the Philippines, but I decided to add some looks that I personally built in my little office here. These looks are the opening look modeled by a friend who is now signed to Elite Models New York, Nikita McElroy, the other is worn by Danias my final look.

Making her mark in a major fashion city like New York is a dream for many designers, and the same goes for Bessie, who has always wanted to expand her brand in the United States. To make this dream a reality, the designer is back in school and taking a short program at the Parsons School of Design. In the future, he plans to expand his knowledge of design by taking courses at Central St. Martins in London.

“From a brand perspective, I will be migrating my brand to be based in New York and also venturing into other areas of fashion in the United States,” Bessie thinks. “I’m very happy to improve my abilities and enjoy every moment of this opportunity.”
